In Historically Black Conference, Non-Blacks Fill Baseball Rosters

Tommy Stratchko plays first base and designated hitter for Coppin State University in Baltimore. His twin brother, Bernie, plays third base for the
University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Three years ago, when their mother
Norma first heard the acronym HBCU, she had to ask what it meant.
Today, when the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference -- a collection of
historically black colleges and universities -- begins its baseball tournament
in Norfolk, Norma Stratchko and her husband will be in the stands and
their sons will face each other on the field.

African-Americans haven’t abandoned baseball

For the next three days, the biggest lie in the history of sports will be
exposed with a bunch of swinging, throwing, fielding, sliding and running
at Georgia Perimeter College in Clarkston. More than 100 high school
baseball prospects, mostly from the South, will flash their considerable
skills on campus, and here’s the thing: The prospects will be darker than
the ball...

Black players get a chance to play in a Tournament

Football and basketball seem to have become the sport of choice for
most of the top young black athletes. But the lure of others sports is
only one of the issues confronted by Mentoring Viable Prospects, a
nonprofit group based in Atlanta that held its first showcase for black
baseball players at Georgia Perimeter College last weekend.
